Do What You Do Best… Yourself!

You may be asking… How can “being yourself” in voice over be tough sometimes?  Aren’t you always yourself?

Well?  We certainly are always ourselves, but voice actors always need to keep in mind that being a more polished version of ourselves is really what’s wanted.  I’m sometimes sloppy with my words when I’m being casual in conversations, but never when I’m doing a voice job.  As a voice talent you have to be super careful of things like slurring words together, mouth clicks, over pronunciations & using your “voice over” voice too much.

You may not know what I mean, but if you’re a voice over artist, you DO know exactly what I mean.  Most of us can switch that voice (& several others) on & off like a switch, but people in the business know it to be a fake version of themselves.  So, again – being natural is the key…

One of my favorite things to do is voicemail systems.  It’s easy to hear that “voice over” voice when a person is trying to be overly corporate & nice-sounding.  So, for me I work more on finding that balance & just do what the title says… be myself!

Happy Recording!
