OK, I wasn’t IN the Philippines, but I did Skype with someone there for this interview!  I was interviewed by a man named Sam with DirectVoices on the topic of voice health, so the below information is a recap of some of the information I shared with the world.  Once the official write up is ready, I’ll edit this post &  add the link!

So as a Voice Actor, you must take care of your voice.
What tips can you share about how to take care of your voice?

  • Water, water, water.  The vocal chords only do well when you are hydrating yourself & keeping them lubricated.
  • Also: Foods containing large amounts of water are excellent for hydration too — including celery, apples, pears, watermelon, peaches, melons, grapes, & plums (don’t forget the acid in green apples are better at cutting the phlegm in the back of the throat than red)
  • If you have a big project to do, know to rest your voice ahead of time
  • No smoking – it irritates vocal chords.
  • No alcohol either – it’s a dessicant: it replaces water in your body and dehydrates you.
  • Avoid yelling, screaming, coughing & even whispering when you do have laryngitis
  • Don’t clear your throat too often. When you clear your throat, it’s like slamming your vocal cords together. Doing it too much can injure them and make you hoarse.
  • Humidify your home and work areas. Remember, moist is good for the voice.
  • My new favorite mouthwash is Biotene.  It really helps to minimize dry mouth & clicking!

Plus, don’t forget those warm ups before performing!

  • Do lip or tongue trills in the morning to facilitate better use of airflow and breath – So: Ma Ma Ma (lip) & La La La (tongue)
  • Perform gentle humming and cooing to warm up your voice in the morning.
  • Tongue Twisters are great too!  —> My favs: Red Bugs Blood, Black Bugs Blood – She sells seashells by the seashore

Happy Recording!
